Punk has been making a comeback in fashion for months, and now it’s making its way into cinema thanks toCBGB, a movie dedicated to the NYC nightclub (which stands for Country, BlueGrass, and Blues). The downtown hotspot opened in the ’70s and was a platform for new wave and punk bands like Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop, and Ramones. The new film, starring Malin Akerman, Ashley Greene, Alan Rickman, Justin Bartha, and more, sheds light on what it was like to be a part of this music movement.

“It was a time when people came out of their garage with their band,” Akerman (who plays Debbie Harry) told us when we caught up with the cast at the L.A. premiere and after-party at Hemingway’s Lounge, sponsored by Lucky Brand and Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka. “They’d get booked at these little clubs like CBGB. That’s what was cool. Or, I shouldn’t even say cool, because no one cared about cool.”

The film primarily focuses on CBGB’s owner Hilly Kristal and his knack for spotting raw music talent. “No one is going to like you guys,” Kristal famously said to the Ramones (and the scene is captured in the movie). He put them on the stage, regardless. Soon, his commitment to county, bluegrass, and blues was dropped as the punk revolution emerged.

“There’s a general misconception that punk was a violent, dirty movement and atmosphere,” said Greene (who plays Kristal’s daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman). “But that’s not what it started as, and it’s not how it came to be what it was. It was actually a supportive, collaborative thing. There was heart and passion behind it.”

Although not all 50,000 bands that graced CBGB’s rickety, homemade stage became famous during its 33-year tenure (the space was closed in 2006), it’s still a major landmark. Toward the end of the film, Alan Rickman (who plays Kristal), says, “These kids have something to say—we really should listen.” See how CBGB did when the movie opens on October 11.

Their daughter may be a Twilight star, but Ashley Greene‘s parents aren’t jaded by Hollywood yet. The 26-year-old actress exclusively tells Us Weekly that her mom, Michele, and dad, Joe, lost their cool while meeting her costar and Big Bang Theory actor Johnny Galecki on the set of their new movie, CBGB.

Though the Randall Miller-directed drama is about New York City’s punk-rock scene and CBGB nightclub, the film — also starring Malin Akerman, Justin Bartha and Alan Rickman – was shot in Savannah, Ga.

“My family is in Jacksonville, Fla. and it’s only a two hour drive, so every weekend my family would come up and visit me,” Greene told Us. “I had friends out there too, so we would just go out in Savannah to little things that were walking distance. The funniest part was that after we wrapped the cast would go and do their own thing, but 90 percent of the time you would run into your castmates in town because the area was so small. It was fun just running into and hanging out.”

Her most memorable run-in?

“The best one was running into Johnny Galecki in Savannah because I was with my parents and they’re huge Big Bang Theory fans!” she shared. “It was nice to watch them freak out about him. My mom and dad were just geeking out.”

Greene hasn’t been bumping into her former Twilight costars – Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Kellan Lutz, Nikki Reed and others, all of them working around the world — as much these days, but she tells Us they “all stay in touch as much as we can.”

“It’s hilarious, because Kellan is always in Bulgaria! I’m like, ‘Why are you out there still?’ But it’s good for him,” she explained of the actor working on his next film, Hercules 3D, overseas. “Skype is kind of a way for everyone to stay in touch when we are off filming in different places. I see everyone ever so often, it’s nice to play catch up. It’s a pro and con that everyone is so busy.”

“There was a bond formed by being a part of something as massive as Twilight,” Greene admits, “so it’s nice to reconnect with all those people when we can.”

Ashley Greene Exclusive Interview

At what point in the process did you actually get to talk to the real Lisa Kristal?

“Pretty early on, honestly. I asked to speak to her as soon as I started developing the character because I figured it was pointless to start creating this whole world and character before talking to her. It makes my job a lot easier having the person I’m playing to speak to because all of the choices that I’m making I’m a lot more confident in, knowing I can just ask her and she’ll tell me. So we just started doing Skype calls pretty early on and then I met her as soon as I got to set.”

How much did the script actually change or evolve based on what you learned from Lisa?

“It didn’t change terribly, but there’s certainly…a bit of dialogue changed. Jody [Savin] and Randall [Miller] are quite close and friendly with Lisa, so when they were writing the script they were talking to her the whole time. But then they were also really open to any ideas and tweaks and changes that I had. It was really pleasant to do because you never really know what you’re going to get. Some people are very precious about what they’ve written. It was a very open, safe, collaborative atmosphere.”

When you were talking to Lisa, was there any one thing in particular you were able to latch on to that said, “This is how I get inside this character?”

“Just by speaking to someone and getting a sense of what their nuances are, their personality and their temperament, you can gauge that right away with her, so that was helpful. As soon as we started talking about her dad, I instantly felt the love that she had for him and knew what was most important to her was that the audience felt that relationship between the two of them and saw the love behind their actions and words. They are both very strong characters and tended to butt heads. She was much more business-oriented and he was much more artistic than her. Together as a team, despite their differences, they ended up working quite well together, but getting to that point was a rocky road. You see in the film there’s a lot of tempers flaring and snide comments. I just wanted to make sure that I was able to portray the love behind that whole thing rather than just making them kind of angry and arguing the entire time.”

It’s so interesting that a lot of times she seems more like the parent and he seems like the child. I thought that was an interesting aspect of their relationship.

“Definitely. It’s thoroughly endearing in that he just doesn’t understand that there’s a whole other side to running a business. He, bless his heart, was so passionate and loved music and art so much that he failed to think about the commerce side of things. She had to step in and say, ‘There are consequences to your actions and there are rules to abide by.’ I instantly picked up on the same thing, that she was, a lot of times, the adult in the whole situation.”

I love the relationship between you and Alan Rickman on screen. How easy was it for you two to work together on that on screen relationship?

“It was really easy and really fun. I’m not going to lie, I was a little nervous. I didn’t know what to expect. He’s such a presence. He’s such a respected, phenomenal actor that I was really nervous to see what he was going to be like. He was definitely the caretaker off-set. I think on-screen, she’s the adult. But off-screen, he was there and making sure that I was comfortable. And we talked things through. It was really, really fun to be a part of. I think he’s one of the actors that I’ll definitely remember working with and the kind of experience and impact that he had.”

I would have liked to see a little bit more of you and Alan together getting to interact at all. It seems like it could be its own short film or its own little spin-off.

“Thank you. I would not have turned down more time with Alan Rickman. I think it was interesting; they had to balance it out. But I do love the fact that they’re in the midst of this crazy world, the heart behind everything. I think that it was a really cool element to put in.”

Did you have any idea about this punk scene and its origin before you did the movie?

“I was aware of it, I guess is the best way to put it, but I definitely was not well-versed. I didn’t know the extent of the impact this punk movement had on people. I think it was just before my time that this whole thing happened. Once I signed on, I had my work cut out for me as far as research and that whole thing to understand it. I do find it quite interesting that whenever you see this film, it’s a lot less violent and judgmental than you would think. It’s definitely crazy and there’s wild antics, but I feel like there’s a supportive element in this film that you wouldn’t necessarily think of whenever you think of CBGB and the punk movement.”

It kind of romanticizes the whole time period, don’t you think?

“Yeah. And I think people see the performances and see what the artists want them to see as an act, but didn’t see behind the scenes and everything that happened and where these people are coming from. I liked the direction that Randy went in.”

“I’m so impressed that [THR and Valentino] were able to get all these busy, powerful women in one room at the same time,” Greene said, clad in a floral embroidered Valentino dress that she was “obsessed” with. The starlet agreed with THR senior style writer Merle Ginsberg, who penned the magazine’s “Power of Style” piece, that power and style indeed go hand in hand.

“Style is empowering,” Greene said. “There’s something about clothes that you feel good in that gives you that extra boost of confidence. I really love that there’s a focus on that within our industry now.”

dawno nic nie dodawałam więc teraz trzeba nadrobić:

You know the story: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl fall in love. Girl dies and comes back as a zombie.

Well, that’s the story of Burying the Ex, a new romantic zombie comedy, or zom-com, as the cast and crew call it, starring Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Anton Yelchin (Star Trek). EW was on set for an exclusive first look and a chance to talk with the stars and director.

Burying the Ex follows Max (Yelchin), an all-around nice guy, and his incredibly beautiful but overbearing and manipulative girlfriend Evelyn (Greene). After they move in together, Evelyn is killed in a freak accident, leaving Max single and free from her controlling nightmare — or so he thinks.

“Her boyfriend has his mourning period, but then gets over it,” Greene said. “Much to his dismay, she comes back as a zombie but doesn’t clock that she is a zombie and thinks that true love has brought her back and that they’re supposed to be together forever.” Though Greene is best known for playing another supernatural creature, the Twilight comparisons pretty much end there. “It’s a lot different, ’cause I think in Twilight we are trying to get into humanity and hide the secret that we have. The fun thing about this film and with Evelyn is that when she comes back, she’s got no boundaries and no filter. It’s a lot more outrageous, not that vampires aren’t farfetched.”

“When she returns as a zombie, she’s a thousand times worse and more controlling,” Yelchin told EW. To prepare for the genre film, Yelchin watched classic undead movies like White Zombie and Night of the Living Dead , but noted that working with Gremlins director Joe Dante made it special. “When I think of this movie, I think of it as more of a Joe Dante film than a genre movie, because he’s always represented a very specific take on genre and he’s always created genre films that were always aware of their genre.”

Dante, who hasn’t made a film in Hollywood in 10 years, is happy to be part of the emerging trend in the horror-comedy world. “When I was a kid, zombie movies were pretty much the lowest rung. People didn’t take them very seriously and they were very cheap to produce,” Dante said. “The appeal of genre is that people want to see the same things over again, but they want to get them in a new package. It’s the packing that makes it work. The mainstream genres of westerns, war pictures, and comedies have taken a backseat to this once reviled supernatural.”

Audience may be reviled by Greene’s appearance throughout the film: She goes through six different stages of zombie makeup and prosthetics designed by special makeup effects designer Gary Tunnicliffe, who provided scary features for films like Dracula 2000, My Bloody Valentine, and Scary Movie 5. “We wanted more of a realistic approach, if you can have that with a zombie,” Greene said. “But there’s a lot of translucency and layering and attention to detail with veining and stuff like that, so when people look at it, there’s the odd sensation that she kind of still looks attractive.”

The movie is currently filming in Los Angeles, and fans have a chance to get even further involved in the film before it hit theaters. Through a partnership with FundAnything, fans have the opportunity to be actively involved in the making of the film based on their level of contribution. Rewards include the opportunity for people to visit the set, have lunch with the director, access to exclusive material through production, as well as signed items, access to special screenings, a VIP premiere package, and much more. Participants will become part of a community that will receive regular updates on events related to the film.

“I’m thrilled to partner with FundAnything on Burying the Ex, and I am really looking forward to getting the opportunity to meet the fans who are contributing to the funding of this project,” said Dante. “I’ve always appreciated their input, and giving them this unique opportunity to be part of this production is pretty cool.” For more information of how you can contribute and get involved, check out their FundAnything page.

ASHLEY GREENE INTERVIEW – JUSTJARED.COM EXCLUSIVE

Just Jared: How’s filming going so far? You’ve been shooting for a couple weeks now!

Ashley Greene: This is our last week, which is really weird. We shot it really fast! We cover so material everyday, the most I’ve ever experienced but it’s fun! This week has been the most fun, as far as acting goes. It’s when I get to be a full-on zombie, it’s pretty much the end stages of [my character] coming unraveled. There’s a lot of extreme highs and extreme lows. We’re doing a battle this week! We did some stunts last Friday. So now we’re getting into very physical acting and stunt work. It’s been so much fun, it’s just very bizarre that it’s almost over.

JJ: How long does it take to apply your make up every day, it gets more intense?

AG: It does, yes. I’m scheduled to start about two hours before everyone else comes in. We start with Gary, the prosthetics end of it first. He puts on the base, paint, and white powder. Then, when he’s about 75% done, I go over to hair and makeup. This is actually the first day they’re wigging me. They decided that for all of the crazy zombie hair, instead of putting my hair through all that hell, they are going to use a wig. So after that, the makeup artists do their little tweaks, then I come back to Gary and he finishes the body work and we put in the contacts and the teeth. It’s quite a process but it’s worth it. I’ve never seen zombie makeup that looks this cool! It’s the most realistic I’ve ever seen, especially the beginning stages.

JJ: When you first saw yourself in the zombie makeup, what went through your head?

AG: “This is cool! I love my job!” (laughs) I was just having a conversation with my mother, talking about all the things that I had done in the past two and a half days. I worked on this, and I also had to do some voiceover work and ADR, so three separate projects. They’re all vastly different, and I had to do the craziest things for each of them! So I was just saying to her how cool it is, what I get to do, and getting to experience all these different things that I would never ever get to experience. I’ve taken a lot of pictures at every stage, to show my mom, because it’s very cool to see your hair and makeup grow with you and your character. A lot of the times you don’t get to see the progression so clearly, so it’s really cool to see what they do.

JJ: You mentioned doing your own stunts, how’s that been? We saw you slam your hand against a table! Have you had any injuries?

AG: I haven’t had any real injuries. On Friday, we did a scene where I slip and break my neck, essentially, and I did that myself. That was really fun, a little intimidating at first, but I was super excited about it. I knew I was going to be super sore this weekend, because I’ve never used those muscles before. I did a lot of throwing people around last week. I probably hurt myself doing the stuff today, the easy stuff, like slamming your hand onto a table. When you’re in the moment, you don’t think about the fact that doing it over and over is going to hurt your hands. But it’s believable and that’s what they want!

JJ: You and Anton have a lot of scenes together, how did you build your chemistry?

AG: We started talking on the phone before we got to set, because the timeframe we had before we began the movie was very short. Just from our general banter, I knew we’d get along. His sense of humor and mine are similar. He’s a pro, and he’s such a sweetheart! I hurt my hand and he gave me a cold Coke to hold until the icepack arrived. He’s really cool and really fun to work with.

JJ: How would you describe him in one word?

AG: Unique.

JJ: How would you describe your character?

AG: My character’s name is Evelyn and she is kind of an overbearing and controlling girlfriend. She has good intentions, but they’re not very well received. She becomes too passionate about what she thinks is right and tends to overlook the qualities that other people have, which are not like hers. She thinks everyone should be like her. She wants to save the world and make it green, she’s all about positive energy, and giving back. But I think her downfall is she’s so desperate to have this idea of love in her relationship that she doesn’t see that her and Max aren’t well suited for each other. That’s kind of what makes the relationship crumble. Then she comes back as a zombie, and she is kind of Evelyn x10. When she’s happy she’s extremely happy, when she’s sad she bawls, when she’s mad, she breaks floors and tables. She’s a complex character, that one! (laughs)

JJ: If you had any advice to give Evelyn, what would you tell her?

AG: Calm down! Just calm down, or let it go! (laughs) No, I think in all honestly, I’d probably tell her to sit back and really think about what she loves about herself and what she loves about Max, and figure out if she’s really right for him. Because I think that’s really what the problem is, they’re just not right for each other and she just won’t let it go. I think a lot of girls do that because they’re afraid of being alone. But it’s much better being alone than being in a relationship that just doesn’t work.

JJ: That’s very true! So we saw some pictures of you playing dead in a scene. Obviously you have to be very still for that. What kind of techniques are you using?

AG: Well, I was a swimmer, so I have pretty good lung capacity. You take a deep breath before, but if you’re going to be there for a little bit you take shallow breaths. Depending on if they’re not super close and it’s a wide shot, generally they won’t be able to see it.

JJ: What’s your favorite scene that you’ve shot so far?

AG: There’s a scene where Evelyn comes back, it’s her first night and Max wakes up thinking it was a nightmare, and it wasn’t. She’s very child-like, so she’s bouncing around and jumping all over the place. It was the first time I really acted a full scene as zombie-Evelyn as well, so that was fun. She does have such extremes that sometimes she is like a child. It was a lot of trying different things and a lot of laughing.

JJ: Sounds like a lot of fun. What drew you to the project?

AG: I read the script and I like it a lot more than I thought I was going to. You know, you hear “Zombie, Horror, Comedy” and you don’t really know what you’re going to get, a lot of people don’t really hit the mark. But I found myself laughing out loud to myself. That’s one of my favorite things, laughing out loud by myself, watching a movie or reading a book or a script. I found myself giggling a lot! It’s just funny and outrageous, but you can relate to it in some way.

Again, Evelyn loses her filter halfway through, so the things that come out of her mouth – I feel like we all have friends like that, and that’s what she reminds me of. Also, [director] Joe Dante is so well respected. I love Gremlins just like everyone else did, and I feel like if anyone was meant to do this film it’s him. There’s that and also when I asked who they were looking at for the leading man, they mentioned Anton and I think he’s an interesting, talented actor and I would have loved to work with him. Everything just kind of fell into place, and now we’re almost done!

JJ: So what makes this film different from the other horror/comedy films that have come out recently?

AG: Honestly, a lot of it has to do with Joe and how he’s capturing things. The way he directs is so simple and there’s no frills or ego, he just knows what he’s doing and what he wants to accomplish. We as actors have a large amount of trust in him, and I think his vision is really going to come to life. He understands how to obtain that comedic core that is very hard to do. I’ve never seen anything like this before, it’s different than every other zombie film. Even with hair and makeup, I feel like there’s nothing that’s overkill with this film and I think that’s going to be refreshing. It’s silly and it’s going to be a lot of fun.

JJ: What’s the funniest thing that happened off set?

AG: When it’s me, Anton, and both sets of hair and makeup people in our trailers, we just get a little loopy. We’re on the third week, so things come out of our mouth that I probably shouldn’t even mention because it’s just stupid. We’re all 10 year old boys telling burp and fart jokes, basically. (laughs) There’s a sense of family and camaraderie amongst us, which is nice to have when you have to be here for awhile.

JJ: What’s your favorite set prop?

AG: You know, I just signed my tombstone, my character’s tombstone. I think that’s my favorite. We also did a cast of my face and we made a dummy, which is really creepy and weird because it looks just like me. I mean, it’s my face. So that’s another one of the coolest things I’ve seen. But no one else will ever get to see it!

JJ: Aw, man! So when you’re in your trailer relaxing, how do you like to occupy your time?

AG: We actually don’t have that much down time, which makes sense on this film, given the amount we have to shoot. But generally, reading other material, or now Christmas shopping, I’m trying to get that out of the way whenever I can. Most sets I’m on, if I have a lot of down time, I usually bring a book or a film. Sometimes when you do have a lot of down time it can be frustrating, so you bring something to make you feel like you’re being productive.

JJ: You just mentioned Christmas, do you have any fun plans that you can share with us?

AG: I’m going to be traveling a bit, I might go to New York. I actually kind of used to live in New York, I split time there a lot. So I’m going to go back there and spend some time with friends for a few days and see the snow and all that, then I’m going to head to Florida and see my family. My parents just did some updates to their home so they’re excited to have everyone over. I’m very excited. My Memaw (grandmother) actually just turned 80 and I missed her birthday, so I’m really excited to see her.

Dear “Wish I Was Here” Family;

We’re off to Park City, Utah to premiere our movie at Sundance. To those of you who’ve joined us in recent weeks, we are so honored to have you in our family. To our backers who’ve been with us since day one, please know that we are VERY aware that none of this would have happened without you. We are filled with gratitude and love as we share “Wish I Was Here” for the very first time. The first showing of the film is this Saturday at 11:15am in Park City.

We have no idea yet what our poster will be when the film is officially released to theaters. But here, for your eyes first, is our poster for Sundance:

With love and respect,
Zach, Adam, Stacey, Coco, Michael, Ameet
&
Kate, Mandy, Joey, Josh, Ashley and Pierce
